Good to highlight this. Yes the story of Ota Benga is sick. It parallels the evil colonialist actions of the Leopoldo regime in Congo. Quite simply you mention how he was brought over from Congo along with other animals. This is the thing. He was not ‘human’ in the American society. You go to the zoo to see ‘animals’ and this was an extension of American slavery. Slaves were not ‘human’. RIP Ota. The sad thing is that this is history and we only have to look at events this year to see that Africans are still not considered humans in many people’s eyes.
